Jesus came to Earth to bring glory to God. But how? By representing Him well on Earth. Jesus came to show us what love looks like. Love is shown through sacrifice. Jesus was coming to demonstrate sacrificial love.
And Jesus answered them, “The time has come for the Son of Man to be glorified and exalted. I assure you, most solemnly I tell you, Unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains [just one grain; it never becomes more but lives] by itself alone. But if it dies, it produces many others and yields a rich harvest.”
(John 12:23-24 AMPC)
Jesus was about to confuse His disciples. They did not understand that Jesus was the suffering servant depicted in Psalm 22 and Isaiah 53.
Triumphal Entry and Results (5:26)
The time of His last supper with the disciples had come. Jesus was about unfold the deepest part of His teaching reserved for His closest followers. This would take place just before the Passover Feast. Jesus wanted His followers to see that Passover was a perfect picture God had given to Israel showing how the Messiah would solve the sin issue once and for all. Prior to the Exodus from Egypt God was going to judge Egypt, which was a type or picture of the world, bent against God and following after false God’s. He was going to send a death angel to kill all of the first born sons including the son of Pharaoh. God told Israel to have a special meal prior to their deliverance. This meal involved the death of a spotless lamb whose blood was to be spread on the doorposts of the homes of the children of Israel. When the death angel came to the house with the blood he would pass over that house, sparing them from judgement.
In an attempt to show His disciples what humility and servanthood looks like in action He chose to do something that would shock them.
Last Supper (4:24)
Jesus continues to set the stage for His ultimate act of love. Two of His own would soon betray Jesus. One would hand Him over and one would deny that he even knew Him. Jesus foretells both of these events prior to them happening.
Betrayal and Denial Foretold (4:50)
